The fleeting drama was filmed in various locations around the United States in the late 1950s. It was shot mainly in October and November. According to IMDb, the first western film was shot in Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. Other locations in California include the Mojave Desert, the Sieraa Madre Mountains and the Warner Brothers Burbank Studios on 4000 Warner Boulevard in Burbank. Along the Great Divide, the filming locations also consist of Yuma and Mojave Desert in Arizona.
The film starred Kirk as Marshal Len Merrick and Virginia Mayo as Ann Keith. John Agar plays Billy Shear while Walter Brennan plays Timothy ‘Pop’ Keith. In addition to the cast of Great Divide, Ray Teal, Hugh Sanders, Morris Ankrum, James Anderson and Charles Meredith are also represented in the supporting roles.
