Thatcher, Morenci transfer onto the quarterfinals | Sports activities
Four local soccer teams have evolved after the season, two are still on the hunt. Thatcher and Morenci high schools will advance to the quarterfinals, while Safford and Pima ended their season with play-in losses.
Thatcher traveled to Perry to meet the Arizona College Prep and won a close 27:22 game against the Knights on Friday night. The Eagles are in 8th place and are now on their way to Yuma for 3A No. Meet 1 Yuma Catholic Shamrocks of the State. The Eagles, who are in their first year in 3A and their first year under coach Daniel Jones, will hit a 5-3 season mark to face the 8-0 Shamrocks.
Safford’s season ended Friday with a 35-8 loss to American Leadership Academy-Gilbert. The Bulldogs and first year head coach John O’Mera finished the 2020 season 4-3 and a statewide 3A ranking of 12th.
The Roughriders of Pima’s hopes ended in Benson on Friday when the No. 1 Bobcats earned them a 28-7 loss. Pima set a 2-4 record in the shortened COVID-19 season.
Morenci got a late season reunion when Sequoia Pathway was forced to lose the box office on Friday night. Wildcats # 8 will be on their way to Benson # 1 this Friday night with a chance to avenge their only loss of the season. On November 13, the Bobcats set the only flaw in Morenci’s record with a 21:15 victory.
Head Joe Garcia’s words to the team after the game have proven prophetic. He said, “I have a feeling we’ll see her again in the postseason.”
